There is still time to see: MARI LYONS F L O A T I N G  P A L E T T E S and other recent work  Mari Lyons, Time Remembered IV, 2015, oil on canvas, 70 x 80 in.   October 6 - October 31, 2015 In her new show, FLOATING PALETTES and other recent work, Mari Lyons borrows an image, a sign, from the late, magical studio paintings of Georges Braque -- with a nod, too, to the floating world of the Japanese Ukiyo-e print. In Braque's metaphysical studio interiors, objects are transformed into towering events over which palette and bird float. He reinvents perceptual space. Lyons, in her interiors, uses objects, some real some imagined, to explore (for her) new spaces. Some of these objects, subjects, are an Ibibio sculpture (which she has nicknamed "Geraldine"), a carousel horse (the subject of many of her earlier paintings), an African rooster, a wooden copy of an eighteenth-century angel, casts from the ancient Greek, and all the paraphernalia-paints, brushes, paintings, vases, bottles, easels-things that inhabit a painter's studio. In these, she mediates on the ever floating and forming language of painting in the dramatic world of the studio. "In these works," says Lyons, "some more objective, some more subjective. I have sometimes used the language of abstraction. Opening Reception: April 2, 6-8pm KATHLEEN BENNETT BASTIS PERMUTATIONS   Scattered Geometry, Tobacco hooks, metal, cord, nylon screen, 48 x 48 x 2", 2014 MARCH 31 - APRIL 25 "I am inspired by the distinctive character, energy and form found in the fragments of discarded, washed up, broken or otherwise overlooked materials which I salvage from the street, river bank and scrap yards. Their unique shape, texture and hue guide my creative process as I reinterpret the history of this detritus and construct a contemporary visual narrative." ­Permutations is Kathleen Bennett Bastis' first solo exhibition at First Street Gallery from March 31 to April 25, 2015. Pop - Up: On & Off the Wall Series:1

FIRST STREET GALLERY is pleased to introduce its first 3-day POP UP Show. One, of a series of three to be held on consecutive weekends in January. Diverse groups of artists are given room to exhibit an extensive range of work from abstract to figurative; paintings, installations, drawing and sculpture. Each show encompasses a broad spectrum of contemporary practice. In our age of polyphonic diversity the title, “NO RESTRICTIONS” easily assimilates into today’s vast canons of possibilities. So too, First Street Gallery has evolved over the decades into more open expressions of individual artistic visions.
